Pop vs Soda vs Coke vs Blahblah

I came across this interesting map. Countywise-distribution of how people call soft-drinks. Interesting pattern. Most Republicans call soft-drinks Coke and most Democrats call it Pop. Thats why the red and blue colors. So change what you call soft drinks now, based on what your party calls it!!

Also, do note some funny things happening..like that green blip on the top of Minnesota, or near Milwaukee, or that big “Soda” county patch near Ilinois/Missouri border. What the hell is happening there? It could be sampling issues, but any other explanations? Is there a life-history kind of effect?

Btw, am just kidding about Republicans and Democrats…sad joke…

China blocks access to iTunes library!!

As the story goes, China has blocked access to the millions of songs in the iTunes library because some athletes downloaded songs from an album called Songs for Tibet. Downloaders in China get the screen below thanks to the ‘Great Firewall of China’. Well, great going, China for all the Olympic gold medals, but if your intention was to show your arrival on the world stage, I am not sure how many points you get for it.

Beijing Olympics grand opening video

This openeing ceremony was simply awesome.

Watch it in full here

About 22,000 people took part in the gala, in which 15,000 costumes were used and 43,000 fireworks lit. Read about the secrets of the opening ceremony from the director of the ceremony himself – Zhang Yimou

The opening ceremony tries to portray one thing – that the Chinese can use their population as a resource and not as a liability. They move the nation by people. Their progress is inherently tied to the use of people. What they wanted to show, with their grand scale and beautifully synchronised performances, was that they can use the sheer force of humans to just push things through. And the message did get through clearly…

This perspective is also reflected in their economic progress, in their communist ideology, in their attitude towards society. Its like the human body – the brain controlling the rest of the organs without the organs having any autonomy. The brain takes care of the needs of the body, achieves perfect synchrony between the different organs, and charts out the future and the destiny of the body.

I dont know, and do not wish to judge, whether this is good and bad. What I would like to say though is that with the right perspective and the right intentions, this approach might just work wonders for the planet and for mankind. But then, wouldn’t that be called “democracy”?

Amazing Indian street kid from Mumbai

As an Indian, I feel proud to see this video. But when I think of Ravi, the kid in this video, I feel bad that he has to spend his life on the streets when he could have achieved so much in his life. This is not just the story of Ravi, its the story of India. Immense talent, immense power, but still criminally under-utilized. Spread this video around, if you can.

The same kid, in his teenage years…

Train runs through Bangkok market

Continuing my documentation of cultural eccentricities is this amazing video, where a train runs through a proper vegetable market in Bangkok. Its interesting to look at how people live in different parts of the world…we live in a pond and think thats the whole world…but believe me, its not!

Are Americans stupid? Wow video!

Many have debated that Americans are stupid. Some have even proposed that Americans are the most productive and ingenious people exactly because of their stupidity. The reasoning is that creativity is nothing but a sudden cessation of stupidity.

In India you have a huge valley between rich and poor. There is such a valley in the US, just between the super-intelligent and the dumb. This is a country where you have Harvard, Princeton, MIT and tonnes of world-class institutions, models to emulate in the rest of the world, and also the country where people think the currency of UK is Queen Elizabeth money! What a shame!

To be fair, the above video is not about stupidity, but ignorance. And ignorance, we all know, is bliss. That means America is a blissful country, which no one can deny. That is why so many people come to the US, in search of bliss. That means, Iraq and Afganistan and North Korea are the most intelligent and aware countries in the world!

Wow! I really like my reasoning prowess! Enjoy the video!

Can you imagine an elephant painting?

One of my friends sent me this video:

This video is so amazing, when I saw it first, I was dumbstruck! First, I wondered whether the mahout (elephant rider) is controlling the elephant in some way or other. But even if it was, isnt the fact that “an elephant is able to draw” awesome by itself? Thats how my friend who sent me the video responded to my skepticism, and I agree fully.

We have these weird illusions that we are at the top of the evolutionary ladder, and we end up doing things like the picture shown below (of whale hunting)

These elephants have now become an endangered species. These intelligent creatures, whose full intellectual ability we may never know. And judging from what the elephant is doing in the above video, I think we better roll up our sleeves and get into the act of finding out…!
